Taiwan PC vendors facing brain drain
Several international PC brand vendors" moves to set up or expand R&D operations in Taiwan are expected to trigger a brain drain for Taiwan-based brand vendors, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Toshiba has been said to be planning to move its R&D team from Japan to Taiwan, while Dell is increasing the number of engineers at its R&D center in Taiwan. Apple is also reported to be increasing its R&D staff in both China and Taiwan.
The sources pointed out that efficiency and low costs are main attractions drawing international brand vendors to increase their R&D staff in Taiwan. These international vendors are expected to pry away engineers from their Taiwan-based competitors.
The international players" moves to move their PC R&D centers out of their headquarters show that the PC industry is becoming less important and players are eager to cut costs by relocating their R&D operations, the sources said.
