It looks like Google will ditch the 7-inchNexus series in favor of the Nexus 8. A Google smartwatch is also on the cards, with a launch set for June.
Google might be considering ending theNexus 7 series and instead start offering an 8-inch Nexus 8. An insider sourcefrom Google"s Dublin offices in conversation with AndroidGuys revealed thatGoogle will launch the Nexus 8 in July, and that the search giant would nolonger manufacture a 7-inch tablet. This is said to be due to the intensecompetition in this field. The 8-inch segment is far less contested, andcurrently features tablets like the Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 andLG"s G Pad 8.3.
The insider source also stated that thenext major version of Android, Android 4.5, will not be announced at thisyear"s Google I/O, but at the launch of the Nexus 8. Google is said to focusmore on services at I/O 2014, which will be held on June 25 and 26.
Rumors of an 8-inch tablet surfaced lastyear, with LG claimed to be the manufacturer of the tablet. However, Taiwanesesources claimed that Asus would more likely be the go-to manufacturer for thetablet, considering that it makes the Nexus 7.
In addition to the Nexus 8, Google is alsosaid to be working on a smartwatch. Initial rumors suggested a March releasefor the wearable device, but that date has likely been extended to June.According to sources familiar with the matter, early iterations of the smartwatchfeatured a metallic wrist band, but Google is said to be inclining toward aplastic band for the final version. The watch is said to feature a full-colordisplay, Bluetooth LE connectivity and a gesture based interaction system.
Earlier rumors also suggested that thewatch would show “Google Now” alerts that include weather information, trafficalerts, reminders, event notifications and more. Work on the watch is said tobe led by a team of Android designers. Samsung has already unveiled its next-generationGear 2 and Gear 2 Neo earlier today that feature Tizen in lieu of Android. HTC,Asus and LG are also said to be working on wearable devices that will debutlater this year.
